Apem is Europe’s leading independent terrestrial, freshwater and marine environmental consultancy. High demand for services during the past 2 years and specifically during the pandemic has seen explosive 20% growth.

In 2019, a management buyout backed by private equity had changed the ethos of the business considerably, meaning additional skills and functions outside of scientific client services were needed to continue growth in line with market conditions and demand.

Our first action was to discover the type and size of the opportunity, by launching a lightweight, remote EVP and employer brand audit to key stakeholders across the business. Seeking to understand the current set of core values and how they were communicated and understood internally.

The audit results confirmed the core values of the business could be better understood internally with a considerable percentage of the employees needing to be able to better reference them. The audit also highlighted areas for better clarity and understanding in the employee value proposition to provide a consistent view across the business.

Improvements in the Employer Brand definition, identity, clarity and communication internally translates directly into improvement in attracting and recruiting talent. Armed with this brief we undertook a light evolution of the employer brand.

Working closely with HR, Talent Acquisition and Marketing, we created an employer brand aligned with and built on the tenets of the main corporate brand, including redeveloping APEM’s careers site within the Team Tailor applicant tracking system, creating a distinct tone of voice to be used across attraction touchpoints, culture-forward messaging highlighting core values, internal brand guide, new job adverts and description templates, social content and a Linkedin life page.

We completed the project within budget and to a very tight deadline, providing APEM with a robust platform upon which to grow.

The lack of definition, identity and clarity in communication internally translated to a large part of why APEM struggled to find, attract and recruit talent. Armed with these findings, we were briefed to undertake a light evolution of the employer brand.

Result

At the time of writing, visits to the careers site have increased by 25%, candidates connecting with APEM directly are up by 87%, and direct applications have increased by 100%.
